My first triathlon indoors

I've been training since October in a triathlon class. On Saturday, I competed against the clock to see how far I could swim in 10 minutes, cycle for 30 minutes and run on a treadmill for 20 minutes. It was my first triathlon event.

I watched the group before me swim. I was surprised to see novice swimmers and intermediate swimmers. I swam too fast to start and felt panic rise from not getting enough breath. I slowed down a little and even turned over to my back to calm down for 20 seconds and kept swimming. Then the negative thoughts started. I got out of the pool and I heard that I had completed 14 lengths at 25 meters each or 350 meters. I changed into my cycling sorts and ran up to the cycling studio. There was a spinning class and the instructor played the music loud and fast. Shouting and urging us to push harder. The ride was fast and hard and I maintained 30 mph for 30 minutes. I believe I covered 15 miles. The run in the treadmill was set at zero incline. I'm used to running at 4-7 incline. I ran at 7.5 - 9. I accidentally hit the stop button once and had to split my time. In 20 minutes, I ran 2.3 miles.

My mood was a little depressed. I had a hard time being excited. I feel better now and I realize that it was a good simulation of a triathlon. I struggle with race pacing and swimming panic. I'm not sure how I will handle myself being in a pod of swimmers and getting kicked, elbowed and splashed. I will learn how to deal with this as it comes up. My next triathlon will be in American Fork and it will be a sprint event.

I've never done or even seen an indoor tri. That is really interesting, and it sounds like you did a great job! I've had moments of panic on the swim before too, thinking I'm crazy and wondering what I'm doing out there. You've just got to relax and go at your own pace. I know it can be hard to relax but the more you do it, the easier it will be! Good luck with your training, you're on your way!
