Wasatch Back Ragnar Relay June 2009 #6
I slapped the baton to Steve and he started his leg of the race. We watched his progress for a few minutes, got in the truck and started following him.
Steve had a tough climb for the first mile and then ran down hill like a maniac! I was driving, navigating across ruts and potholes. As we followed him, I heard comments from Rena and Annie about how fast he was moving down the mountain. It looked like his feet were taking brutal punishment for going so fast down that hill.
We drove up ahead watched for him to catch up to us. As he passed we hooted and whistled. His smile and glib remarks let us know that he was doing fine.
When Steve ran into the exchange point, he was taking in big gasps of air and readily took up his thermos to drink some warm water. He had to drink warm water or it wouldn't go down his throat. It made for an interesting challnge to keep him hydrates properly. Later Steve discovered he had a set of black toe nails and very sore calves.
We met up with the other team of runners from van 2. Chris was up to start her first leg of the race. She looked excited and took off at a good pace after receiving the baton from Steve.
